Club History

Originally, Foyle Rovers was formed in 1904, and there first match was against a Bredaghglen team, Moville lost the match 1-0. Foyle Rovers initially wore red and black stripes back then, they only converted to the hoops or anything green when they changed their name to Moville Celtic in the 1920’s. Moville Celtic joined the D&D soon after that with a certain degree of success. The closest they came to the Premier title was when they lost a play off. Their best run of results came circa ’76-’77 when they won 7 trophies in the one year Moville’s home pitch was at the Bayfield up until the summer of 2008. There are many stories to be heard from players {Old and young} who have many fond memories of matches at the Bayfield. In the 2006-2007 Season, the Team commenced playing their home games at the new Glencrow Ground. It has to be said that it is one of the best pitches in Inishowen, even Donegal In more recent years, back in the 1997-98 season, a Moville Celtic team {managed by Joe Bredin & Danny McDermott}won 4 trophies, Trophies won that year were: The Premier League, Fruit of the Loom Cup, Bertie O’Neill Cup and the Carndonagh Summer Cup. The 07/08 Season, the Moville Celtic Senior Team won the League Cup, defeating a Redcastle Team in the Final at Greencastle’s Ground, the score was 1-0, Nigel Mc Monagle with the Winner in Injury Time. This was a Historic Year for Moville Celtic & John Canning (the Manager), when the senior Team won the only trophy in Donegal/Ulster competition that has never been won by a Moville Team. A 2-1 victory against Redcastle Utd. at Maginn Park was very well deserved on the night, with Nigel McMonagle scoring the first and then Richie Mc Elhinney scoring the Winner! In that same 2008/09 season, the Moville Reserve Team (managed by Eunan Mc Daid) won the Treble in fantastic style.
